Ministry of Tourism’s portal strandedinindia.com portal to identify and help tourists stranded in several parts of India during the lockdown has emerged a crucial helping hand for such tourists. Since its launch on 31st March 2020, nearly over 1200 tourists have received assistance through the portal as per ministry communication. In addition, the ministry has confirmed to have received phone calls at their regular toll-free helpline from 779 tourists from all over India.

An American woman who was stranded in Bihar during the Covid-19 lockdown has expressed her profound gratitude for the tourism ministry’s efforts in coordinating the required transit-permit and means of travel for her to reach her son who was undergoing medical treatment Delhi at that time. She had requested for help through Tourism Ministry portal.

In another such case, an Australian tourist who was stranded in Ahmedabad had approached the ministry through the portal to help with his epilepsy medicines. Ministry then promptly connected him to the local district collector who provided him sufficient medication, local transport and safe stay.

The portal lists details about a Ministry of External Affairs Covid-19 control centre, with a list of dedicated desks of officials handling different geographic locations, including the U.S., Italy, Spain, Japan, China, Russia and Latin America.

  • Changi Airport Group (CAG) on Tuesday said that Terminal 4 at Changi Airport will suspend all its operations from coming Saturday (16th May). In a statement, CAG said: "Changi Airport's terminal operations will be consolidated further to optimise resources in tandem with the sharp decline in flight movements because of the global Covid-19 pandemic.” Terminal 4 is the newest terminal at the airport, having opened in October 2017. Commenting on the Terminal 4 closure, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said: "These are trying times for aviation and the Changi community. Great uncertainties remain but we remain optimistic on eventual aviation recovery.” Mr Khaw added that the suspension would also allow upgrading works at Terminal 2 to be sped up, which is expected to be completed by 2024. The operations at Terminal 2 were already suspended earlier as the flight traffic decreased substantially due to cross border controls measures to prevent spread of pandemic. CAG statement added "Even as terminal operations are scaled down during this period, CAG continues to work closely with its airline and airport partners and stands ready to restart operations at Terminal 4 as soon as a sufficient number of flights return to the terminal." Stores and restaurants in Terminal 4 will also be closed and shuttle bus service connecting Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 will also be suspended until operations resume. CAG added food and beverage outlets at Changi Airports other terminals are still open for takeaways, and essential services such as pharmacies are still open to serve airport staff members and the public in the airport's public areas. Though, Skytrain services at Changi Airport have been reduced due to low demand.
