Delhi’s IGI Airport to restart Flight Operations at its Terminal 2 from October 1

The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced that the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) located in Delhi will resume flight operations at its Terminal 2 from October 1, 2020.

An official of the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced and informed that the terminal is stepping up preparations to provide a safe and healthy environment for passengers flying to and from Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuria, chief executive officer of DIAL said “We would like to assure passengers that at Delhi airport, they would be in a safe and healthy environment. We have implemented several measures at the airport to ensure passenger safety without compromising their comfort and experience.”

“Our teams have worked round-the-clock to sanitize the vast terminal. DIAL will continue its awareness drive by educating and encouraging passengers to maintain social distance while at the airport,” he added.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, international flights operated from T3 while all the three terminals (T1, 2 & 3) handled domestic flights of all airlines. Although international scheduled flights are still suspended, international travel is taking place under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) and the air bubble arrangements. India has established such arrangement with several countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

Terminal 2 (T2) will become operational again after a huge gap of almost 6 months due to COVID-19 outbreak. Till the date, all flights are operating from Terminal 3 (T3) and it is the only terminal that is being used at IGIA since the nation-wide lockdown imposed at the end of March to curb the spread of the virus.

Now, as the domestic wings of T3 are fully operational, the DIAL has decided to increase flights on T2. Although the reactivation of T1 will require greater traffic growth, its unused state allows airport operators to freely carry out the ongoing expansion work there.

The airport with the resumption of operations at T2 will now handle 96 flights a day, i.e. 48 landings and 48 takeoffs. This number will gradually increase to 180 by the end of October.

After the reopening of the T2, the first flight to takeoff will be by the Indigo airlines and is scheduled to depart for Srinagar at 06:25 am on Thursday (Oct 1). In addition, Indigo airline has said on its official website that flights with 2000 series (6E 2000- 6E 2999) will operate from T2 and urged travelers to ensure their flight number and terminal before leaving for the airport.

Meanwhile, Go Air has also announced on twitter that the airline will operate its all domestic flights to and from Delhi from T2 effective October 1, 2020.
