Indonesia AirAsia to operate direct flights between Jakarta and Perth

Indonesia AirAsia confirms that on June 2, 2023, it will begin operating flights between Jakarta and Perth.

The first-ever fare for this route is currently available, starting at AUD179 (ex-Perth) or IDR1,299,000. (ex-Jakarta)

The direct service, which is being backed by the Western Australian government through Tourism Western Australia (TWA) and the Perth Airport, will launch with four weekly flights, bringing more than 1,400 extra visitor seats each week between Perth and Jakarta Airports, with plans to expand in line with demand. Representatives from TWA, Perth Airport, Indonesia AirAsia, and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia attended an event last week in Perth, Australia, to unveil the new route.

Due to the short flight distance, as well as the popularity of both countries as a shopping, dining, adventure, beach, and educational destination, two-way travel between Indonesia and Australia has long been common. The number of Indonesian students studying in Australia this year alone has reportedly surpassed 20,000, up from 15,000 in 2022, according to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.

Veranita Yosephine, CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, was upbeat about the new route: “We foresee the new Jakarta – Perth route will be very popular for leisure travellers wanting to see more of Indonesia and for the more than 270 million Indonesians (more than 10 million of whom live in Jakarta alone) wishing to visit Perth and West Australia for business, leisure, studying and visiting friends and family.

A320 aircraft with 180 seats will be used on the new Jakarta to Perth service, which will operate four times a week. It takes 4.5 hours to fly.

Indonesia Due to intense demand, AirAsia already operates three daily flights between Perth and Bali, providing more than 7,000 visitor tickets each week through only the Perth and Denpasar airports. The airline will examine options to increase these routes in the future based on demand. Starting with four weekly services from Jakarta, the airline will provide over 1,400 visitor seats weekly through Perth Airport (or over 700 to West Australia).
