Restart Sri Lanka

After the businesses and shops remained closed for 52 days since the deadly outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, Sri Lanka finally opened up its economic activities earlier on Monday, this week.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa launched the national campaign to get Sri Lanka’s economy back on track – “Restart Sri Lanka” to provide the impetus for Sri Lankan businesses to revive the economy and to create that optimism to move forward and support the businesses including small and medium enterprises.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday consented for economic activities to resume lifting the nationwide curfew which lasted more than a month, after the health personnel and authorities were able to successfully contain the spread of pandemic.

While curfew still remains in some areas, the resumption of businesses and opening of shops came to the much needed relief for the general public. The country is slowly coming back to life as people leave their homes for their workplaces. The president appreciated the citizens for how health guidelines were maintained by all of them to support the fight against pandemic to eventually eliminate the spread of the coronavirus. The pandemic has so far infected over 850 people in the country out of which over 300 have recovered and 9 precious lives lost.
